A little late to the year in review 2018 party but nonetheless still here. 2018 was a weird year for me, in the sense that it seemed progressive yet stagnant in different ways.
What I Left Behind in 2018:
More travelling: For the first ever, I went to New York City, it was a pretty memorable time with both my aunt from immediate family as well as my cousin from my homeland. I also went to Chicago again in August
I toured with a band for the first time ever. Mind you it wasn’t a crazy tour, just around Ontario, but it was quite the experience and a lot of learning involved
I graduated school! It took a while to acquire the diploma, after some course corrections I finished, I got the paper haha. Definitely want to do more schooling, just don’t know what it will be yet. If it’s finishing off with a Bachelor’s degree in Art or Biblical Studies, time will tell.
One of the most memorable moments of this year was riding from Barrie all the way to Toronto on the back of a motorcycle with my buddy Will Walker to Echo Beach for a NEEDTOBREATHE concert. It was honestly the hottest day of the year (obviously I’m exaggerating) but honestly so worth it, and the iced coffee from my favourite coffee shop in Toronto (which is Neo Coffee Bar) was the icing on the cake of the day.
Got back to reading more books, only finished 4 but, that’s a lot better than the previous years, and I want to develop that habit a lot more this year.
Got to see one of my best friends get married in Michigan, and also my best friend proposed to his lady, so looking forward to this year’s wedding!
I was a part of the revamping of The City’s Gospel, which is a beautiful story project dedicated to informing both believer’s and non-believers on how to interact with each other, as well as combat the lies of the enemy put into people’s minds. I redesigned the logo and branding for the company while also creating a resource bank of videos and photos for them to use while in season. It was a crazy whirlwind of a few days, but it was so fun and awesome, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Along with that last point, I was a part of a few amazing design projects with some of the coolest clients ever. I helped Matti Haapoja develop some little icons for his Youtube subscriber loyalty tiers. I worked with Grant Gamble of Beanstock Festival to work on some identity work for this year’s Beanstock festival. I worked with a lovely couple from the East Coast of Canada, dedicated to “claiming the north” with their photo feed inspiring people to go outside and adventure whenever they can. Just to name a few.
My love for coffee bloomed (haha ;P) and is ever-growing with many different bags of coffee consumed, with different roasters from all around the world. Got my first chemex and been brewing with it ever since. Bought a couple books to gain some insight as well, hopefully learn lots this year!
Through coffee and Colony House, two of my favourite things in this world, I made a sweet friend named Trevor, He’s been in the coffee world for a lot longer than myself and has been patient with me in teaching me the tricks of the trade. Learning everything from ratios and the quest for the perfect pour, to how long to keep beans for and different methods for brewing coffee. Temperature, water, time, crazy how so many factors can change the flavour or notes you get out of your cup, eh?
More friends both old and new, creating, vibing, and having fun together. Taking some sweet snaps both portrait and landscape, industrial, natural, and everything else in between. All these different outlets that I love to explore creatively have all led to wonderful experiences and growth, so I hope to only continue in this even more in 2019.
What I’m Looking Forward to in 2019:
Reading more books, I’m hoping to read a book a month. That should be plenty of time to dedicate each month to reading.
Along with that goal, I am en route with a couple close friends to finally finish reading the whole Bible from spine to spine, in a year. I’ve read the whole New Testament before, but not the whole Bible yet so I am hoping to get that done. I’d encourage you to find a partner or a couple friends and stay accountable to that goal this year, its so worth it.
Blog/make more video content about coffee; its been such a cool process finding out what coffee tastes like and how to taste it, how to brew it. A big push is for specialty coffee to be more known because of how under-supported it is. Farmers are quitting exponentially and soon there won’t be enough support to continue to produce quality coffee which is scary, so there is a push for people to understand how the coffee business works and what needs to change in order for farms to be sustainable.
Along with all that, I am in the works of building a mobile coffee cart (yes this is legit) with my friend Trevor as a business, in order to gain exposure to build a following and then hopefully one day open up a coffee shop. So the concept is to “pop up” at a place, because of its mobility. So it could be a wedding, it could be a farmer’s market, it could be an event, or just setup shop in tandem with another shop or company within Barrie. So super excited to be making a more official announcement about that in the coming weeks, so stay tuned ;)
Continue to grind those creative gears; more photos, more designs, more ideas, more writing, songs (finally) and the sorts. The more I realize the brain is a muscle, the more I want to exercise it. I have so many ideas for youtube videos, for photo sessions, for client projects. Heck I even applied to the Adobe Creative Residency program for this year, in order to get my MNML project started. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be able to dedicate a whole year to pursuing a passion project and it supplies you with budget, resources, and most importantly time to focus. If I get accepted I’m literally going to go skydiving to celebrate haha.
Travel: I want to go to one place I have never been before. Preferable in Europe (like maybe return to Poland…) but if not somewhere haha. (If someone wants to sponsor me to fly somewhere to review something or take cool photos, I’m so down for that haha)
I am currently in the process of finishing writing and recording my first single…crazy, i know. Just getting the final lyrics done, and then I’ll be off to Hamilton to record some sweet baby music. It’s been a dream of mine to put music out there for listening ears and I’m super excited for that dream to come into manifestation this year!
Going to a LOT of concerts this year. I read last year in an article last year that people lead happier lives that attend concerts. I’m doing it because of that, but all I’m saying is…I’m a pretty happy dude with music so you should try it at least once. Artists like COIN, Switchfoot, Colony House and Hillsong are in the line-ups and we’ll see what comes after!
More relationship-building time. Getting into the deeper, real stuff of life here with people always being top on the priority list. Moment of vulnerability here, 2018 was not the best year for this, and I acknowledge it, and definitely want to improve on it. With the people that I am currently with and with possible new faces I meet this year.
So there you have it, goals, regrets, life-lessons all packed into one post. Hope you enjoyed reading it. Let me know what goals, aspirations, you have made for yourself in 2019 in the comments below! I’d love to talk more about it with you!
