It’s that time again, and it’s been quite the year for good music to come out, depending on what genre you listen to.
So without further ado, let’s get right into my top 10 albums of the year of 2018.
10. portra – joan
These dudes are TASTYYY, like their tunes are so groovy and upbeat. The beats are a drummers heaven and so fun to play to. They were also on my Spotify playlist of upcoming artists, did not disappoint one bit. Also, the snare on this album is TIGHT and PHAT, two qualities of a great snare.
Favourite song to drum to: stop and stare
9. acoustic live vol. 1 – needtobreathe
Honestly this guy should be further down the line. I was thinking of moving it as I wrote this, so just “bear” (see what I did there?) with me in the number 9 spot. These guys are timeless, and it begged the question: WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG TO COME OUT WITH AN ALBUM LIKE THIS? Well, it was worth the wait. Redid some old songs, and crushed the newer songs as well. It was sweet that they collaborated with the Holcomb fam too. It’s so good, I bought it on vinyl. I don’t even have a turntable yet.
Oldie but a goodie:
Stones Under Rushing Water
8. Evergreen – audrey Assad
This woman’s voice…(insert heart eyes emoji here). So beautiful and lyrically rich. Crafted from nature itself it seems, she must’ve retreated to the woods of the Sequoia National Park to write these beautiful earthy and weighty pieces. The ivories that tickle the ear canals are nothing but soothing and the hymn-style stanza’s are so authentic. I could write for days of her sweet voice but I’ll stop here.
Great album-finisher: Drawn To You
7. come out. you’re hiding – flor
This group was on my “The Ones That Got Away” playlist on Spotify, man are they doing a great job at finding out what people need to listen to. Anyways, these guys also broke out onto the indie scene in 2017, but didn’t release the deluxe album until the beginning of 2018. Sweet tones and hard beats make for some roll-down-your-windows, summer breezes music.
Favourite gem in the pack: Rely
6. Birthplace – Novo amor
Oof. What a magnum opus, his voice is something so soothing and captivating, so you don’t expect anything horrible with this release. The themes of this album involve some heavy introspection about humanity and the personal fight against plastic waste. Cleverly laced into the fabric of each song’s DNA this masterpiece needs a full sitting to take it all in. Loved this guy since Anchor, excited for more.
Just a wow song: Seneca
5. Mirror master – young the giant
After a couple strong albums released in 2014 and 2016, it was time again to release some soulful music again. Some pretty synth-driven vibes, and punchy beats but nonetheless a timeless piece of lyrical reflection and soliloquy.
Favourite chunky beat song: Superposition
4. Everything I can’t say out loud – vacation manor
These guys snuck up on me, I remember when they came out with “Girl, Say” in 2016, around the same time I found out about COIN, and then they released, “Fading”, and I got hooked. But this record is the best yet. The guitar tones on this record are KILLER. The guy who produced this album is the bassist for Bryan Adams, so they quality on this record is immaculate. Can’t wait to see what they come up with next. Big things for these guys. They also made a mini-doc on the recording of this album, its on youtube, so worth to check out!
Favourite all-the-feels heartbreaker:
Don’t Say It’s Over
3. Before the sun goes down – the new respects
Wow. These guys popped on to the scene this year. They went touring with Colony House, so of course by association, you gotta check em out. Man they got soul. These guys tackle big themes in their music, fighting equality, social justice issues, kingdom efforts, and much more. Easily one of the best albums of 2018. So groovy, so tight, so good.
Favourite in-the-pocket song:
Something To Believe In
2. Magic – Ben Rector
It had been 3 years since he released “Brand New”, so he better have released a masterpiece, and boy he did not upset. It is a masterpiece. Preying on the nostalgia of humankind and memories of youth, he delicately reminds us of truths we forget as we grow older. Even the sounds of the album are nostalgic, I had a really hard time not putting this album at #1 but a VERY CLOSE second for me.
Favourite hit-you-in-the-feelers, nostalgic song:
1. I’ll be the Branches – Chris Renzema
Well this album came out of a time of uncertainty. With my walk with the Lord, with family issues, with career choice and jobs, a good friend showed me the song: “How to Be Yours” and I just broke down. It hit me in the feels. It was just so fresh to have an album full and rich with verses, choruses and not so repetitive. It came to me at a vital time this year and I’m so thankful for it, I hope it blesses you too.
Favourite song to sing and cry: How to Be Yours
Honourable mentions are in play of course:
Bambi – Hippocampus: came VERY close to making it to the top 10, there just wasn’t enough tracks to justify making it :( but VERY close, I promise.
Runaway – Passenger: discovered it a little too late, and didn’t give it enough of a listen, but almost all the songs are amazing, another one I wish I could squeeze into my top 10 list.
TPC – Tokyo Police Club: soft spot for these dudes. One of the first bands that got me into music and the indie scene. Newmarket natives too, another album I didn’t even know came out this year, but highly regret not listening to it. (It' should be at least number like 8)
Hundred Acres – S.Carey: Rose Petals, one of my favourite songs of 2018. I might do a “Top 10 Songs of 2018” and it would definitely be on that list for sure. His voice is so beautiful and calming.
ABIIOR – The 1975: Another album I regret not putting on the list, loved the themes Matty tackled in this album, a nice shift in pace and heart it seems. Super eclectic mix of songs but somehow works all together.
As it seems, it was another awesome year in music, and my ears are always full of good wholesome content. Next off, my 2018 year in review, and goals for 2019.
I’m curious to see what you people enjoyed in 2018. Please leave a comment of your favourite album or even your top 10 if you want, I’d love to read them :)
