Well...the time has come.
A time to reflect, a time to look back on all the good, the bad and everything in between. The changes that came (and boy were there a lot), the places travelled, the new friends made, the adventures had, and everything else in between. As well as all that, welcoming 2017 with hastened and open hands.
Almost a year ago, I posted this to kick off 2016.
What did I know about the coming year? Nothing, but what I did know is that I would let myself be under the full submission of whatever God had for me this year, and it was true. It wasn't the "year" or anything but it certainly had its beautiful moments, and the bad ones far and few between. God opened a lot of doors and closed others, God put people in my life, and new adventures in my life, while still having some old ones. These are the best nine pictures for this year and I can say I'm pretty proud of them.
This year I wanted to spruce up my photography skills, as any graphic designer/ artsy guy would and I did exactly that. With the help of my sister's friend, Renee, I was able to borrow a camera for basically, a large amount of time that I was not expecting (thank you) and through a course in my program that I took and some time, road trips, and adventures, I was able to capture angles, "views", places, moments in time, that I only dreamed of in my sleep. I found that to find the greatest pictures...
...one must go deep into the unknown
And I believe I surely did that. Went on trials, went to parts of cities I had never been before, discovered a new perspective, it was all a grandeur of artistic abilities and having an eye for things, which apparently I do, or at least that is what everyone tells me.
I went to Chicago twice this year met a lot of cool people too: once to go to my first ever soccer game, and the other to surprise my best friend at Moody Bible Institute. (Ana Pierson, if you are reading this by any chance, I want to meet you :) Both times were amazing, and if you did not read my blog post on The Beginner's Guide to Chicago, I would highly advise you go read it, its a good read. I travelled all over Ontario as well, discovered more cool spots, a good friend of mine showed me Huckleberry trail in Huntsville. Walked along the TransCanada trail, and a few other Simcoe County trails, so its been eventful and the fun only continues as plans for the New Year have already begun. West Coast Canada, Uruguay, England, and possibly Iceland are all on the horizon.
Completed (almost) my second year of Graphic Design and as well worked on a few amazing projects and worked with clients as well. Got connected and networked with more people than years before. Then turned into more clients and more productivity. Opened up a podcast, with three episodes live, uploaded a tune which is super personal but it needs to be out there. Hoping for next year to put even more effort into music writing and recording. Made a few videos on my youtube channel, which half of them are a joke, but my originality comes out through them.
It seems like I did a lot.
But as this year draws a close, and the curtains close, I am reminded of how little I have accomplished and how so much is yet to come. This is only one year in the life a person, and it seems that so much can be and is done, as I explained earlier. I love to write and so I also made a blog, which is where you're reading from right now. This is a dot in the spectrum of the average person's life and yet it seems, like an eternity has past from 2015 to 2016, and now almost 2017. A year of growth, both introspectively and externally. Learning how to love again, how to breathe fresh air, how to welcome newness again. A year of pain, of loss. A reminder of hurt and loss. And still I feel as if there is so much to come, many more road trips to drive in, many adventures to be had, many rivers of water to cross, many trials to overcome, many feats to climb, many lessons to be learned, and attitudes to change, and areas to mature in.
As this year draws to an end, I am reminded of the greatness of the Lord and that His promises are always true. As I wrote in my first post of 2016, I want my heart to be sealed for the courts of heaven. This year, more than ever I have felt the love and content that comes from knowing Christ and Christ alone. A pivotal moment in the year for me was when I noticed I was doing the exact opposite of my year's desire. Through a few circumstances, and the Lord's hand on the people in my life, I was directed right back towards Jesus Christ.
"My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways" Proverbs 23:26
That hit me like the train that I posted a picture of a few weeks ago. I wasn't give Christ my full heart, my full attention, my full commitment. I hate putting excuses, and there is never an excuse when you understand the convictions you have in Christ. I failed to do and when I realized that, I did what any child would do when they were lost and saw their parents...run back. I ran as fast as I could to the word and to devotion. To study and meditate on the word of God, day and night, until the hours of the day ran out and the brain could take no more. It was such a sweet feeding of the Holy Spirit inside of me, and I was so blessed to feel renewed in the strength of the Lord!
I would emplore and advise each and every one of you if you are starting to think of resolutions already, to make the number one resolution to let God take full captivity of your heart, your soul. Let Him come after you and you seek after Him, all the days of this year and of your life. It will be the greatest decision, resolution, choice, change, you've ever made. Your life will never be same.
I know that today I am not the same person I was, this time last year...
If there is one song to sum up this year, this time, this crazy thing we call life, its by my favourite band Colony House and you can listen to it here. ( I swear I want this song to be played at my funeral celebration!)
